The Ferreiras have been part of the beautiful Kouga region for hundreds of years. That's why, when Anton Ferreira took the plunge to create a fine craft rum distillery, he settled on Jeffreys Bay as the location. Here are some glimpses of the past, as well as a peek into the future ...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rum with a twist
One of the things to experience in Jeffreys Bay.
Tucked away on Jeffrey Street in the heart of Jeffreys Bay, Ferreira Post Distillery is a hidden gem that has quickly captured the imagination of locals and visitors alike.
It is more than just a distillery – it is a destination where every sense is engaged, from the sweet, heady scent of sugar cane to the rich, warming aroma of molasses slowly melding in the barrels.
Step inside, and you are invited to embark on a journey through time and taste, discovering a spirit that masterfully blends tradition, innovation, and the unique character of the region. Each sip tells a story, not only of craftsmanship and patience, but also of the rich heritage that the historic Ferreira’s Post farm brings to life.

A Chartered Accountant Turned Rum Maker
Owner Anton Ferreira, once a chartered accountant, swapped spreadsheets for stills after retirement and has been pouring his passion into rum making since September 2021.
What began as a retirement project has quickly grown into one of Kouga’s must-visit attractions, proving that it is never too late to reinvent yourself.
How Boutique Rum is Made – The Simple Version
Making rum may sound like an elaborate process, but in layman’s terms, it all starts with sugar cane.
By adding molasses to the base of sugar cane, the flavour profile of the rum becomes deeper, richer, and more complex. The mixture is then carefully fermented before moving on to distillation. At Ferreira Post Distillery, this is done using state-of-the-art bubble plate reflux columns, which ensure a smooth, refined finish that sets their boutique rum apart.
Once distilled, the rum is either infused with a variety of flavours – from classic notes to playful, unexpected blends – or set aside to mature. Each batch takes roughly two weeks to produce, making every bottle a genuine labour of love and attention to detail.
For those barrels set to rest, the transformation is remarkable. Stored in old whisky casks, the rum slowly absorbs new layers of character, taking on subtle whisky-like notes that intrigue the palate. The oldest batch has been resting for four years, a testament to patience and craftsmanship that results in a spirit both velvety and layered – unlike anything most visitors have tasted before.

A Taste Adventure
At Ferreira Post Distillery, visitors are invited to do more than simply taste rum – they are encouraged to immerse themselves in the full experience. Here, you can watch the craft unfold up close, breathe in the evolving aromas at different stages of the process, and, of course, savour the finished product.
The tastings are designed to be fun, interactive, and eye-opening, offering a chance to explore rum in more ways than one. Guests sample it neat and mixed, learning how the spirit shifts and
transforms depending on the flavours it is paired with. Some enjoy the clean, smooth character served on the rocks, while others discover new favourites when it is blended with mixers.
Ferreira himself insists that rum is at its best when enjoyed playfully – whether with Coke, Appletiser, ginger beer, or even Sprite.

Flavours to Surprise and Delight
Part of the fun is Ferreira’s restless curiosity.
With around 20 flavours – from classics like Dark, Gold, and White Rum to playful creations like Watermelon, Vanilla, Berry, and Cherry – there’s something for every palate. The exotic Pina Colada is a favourite, while the indulgent Rumarula (think cookies-and-cream liqueur) is perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
And when boredom strikes, Ferreira simply dreams up a new flavour, keeping locals and visitors guessing what might be next.

A Story in Every Sip
Named after the historic Ferreira’s Post farm, the distillery is as much about storytelling as it is about spirits. Each bottle embodies the warmth of the African sun, the charm of Jeffreys Bay, and Ferreira’s unyielding passion for craftsmanship.
Whether you’re a seasoned rum lover or a curious first-timer, this is an experience not to be missed.
